Industry Dive wins eight Neal Awards, Restaurant Dive editor earns McAllister Editorial Fellowship
Industry Dive's COVID-19 coverage - and reporter expertise - were recognized by the Software & Information Industry Association with eight Neal Awards and the McAllister Editorial Fellowship at the 67th Jesse H. Neal Awards.
Known as the most prestigious awards in business-to-business journalism, this marks the largest number of Neal Awards Industry Dive has won since it started entering the competition.
“Our newsroom digs into the major stories of the day to report on the critical issues that shape the dramatically evolving industries we cover, but we go beyond the general headlines to help our readers understand how the latest news will affect their businesses,” said Liza Casabona, Industry Dive deputy editor.
“From the development of a COVID-19 vaccine and the pandemic's broader impacts on the healthcare industry to restaurants' new ghost kitchen trend and other ongoing analysis, these winning stories illustrate how we serve our readers and the level of journalism we expect.”
BioPharma Dive won four of the eight awards, including Best Industry Coverage for its overall coverage of the pharma and biotech industry. Its other awards for Best Covid Coverage, Best Editorial Use of Data and Best Single article touch on the variety of topics the team covered throughout 2020 to earn that top honor.
Restaurant Dive’s series on ghost kitchens won the Best Series award and Restaurant Dive Editor Emma Liem Beckett was selected as the 2021-2022 McAllister Editorial Fellow for her work on the project. Beckett will use the series as the basis for a reporting class at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.
“Restaurant Dive's ghost kitchen series began with a recurring question: is this model the pandemic lifeline many restaurants hope it could be? This question grew into a months-long investigation into what it takes to make ghost kitchens profitable, and how they could shape the restaurant industry’s recovery and long-term future,” Beckett said. “I’m so proud of this series and the valuable insight it gives our readers, and I’m excited to share with Medill journalism students how our small team scaled an idea into a flagship project.”
